Rivalry renewed for playoffs

The Munising Mustangs (9-0) will be hosting their first playoff game against the Norway Knights (6-3) at Mustang Stadium on Friday, October 28. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.. Broadcasts will be provided by 97.7 WQXO for the Munising coverage while a digital audio stream through The Newberry News/EUP Sports Network will give the Newberry side. All online video broadcasts are through the NFHS Network app or website.

U.P. represented well in CCHA Players of the Week

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has announced its Players of the Week for the games of October 2829 and four student-athletes from four different programs have been recognized. Louis Boudon (Lake Superior State) was named Forward of the Week, while Jake Livingstone (Minnesota State) earned Defenseman of the Week honors. Blake Pietila (Michigan Tech) was named Goaltender of the Week and Beni Halasz (Northern Michigan) was tabbed Rookie of the Week. CCHA Forward of the Week: Louis Boudon, Sr., Lake Superior State (Grenoble, France) Boudon paced all CCHA skaters with three goals and an assist last week for four points, helping the Lakers to a split with Clarkson. The Lake Superior State captain recorded one goal on the power play, one shorthanded and one at even-strength, with league-highs in face-off wins (28) and shots on goal (11), while posting a +3 for the weekend.

14U hockey hits the ice

The 14U State Savings Bank Hockey team, made of skaters from Newberry, Manistique, and Munising, wasted no time getting back on the ice and getting their season going. As soon as many of the team members’ fall sports seasons wrapped up, the team got together and jumped right into game action.

Skyline Central volleyball awards

The 2022 Skyline Central Conference Volleyball Awards were released Wednesday before the second round of the MHSAA District Tournament. Numerous local players were recognized for their accomplishments, including Superior Central winning the varsity division of the conference and Munising winning the team sportsmanship award.
