Tough start for varsity hockey

The Manistique Emeralds Varsity Co-op hockey team, which features several Newberry players, started its 2022-2023 season with a pair of difficult games last week. Thursday Night’s season opener sent the team to Iron Mountain for a meeting with the much improved Kingsford Flivvers before the home opener at LIttle Bear West Arena in Manistique on Saturday afternoon against Hanccock, who has one of the top high school programs in the Upper Peninsula.

Two Mustangs on MHSFCA All-State squad

Munising’s accolades continued with the announcement of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) First Team All State selection on Wednesday, November 23. Two players from Munising were selected in offensive lineman Riley Murk and linebacker Jacob Mattson. Three total spots on the all state Division 1 eight-man team were from the U.P., with Newberry’s Zach Burton also being selected.
