High school hockey season begins
Several Newberry athletes take the ice as part of the Manistique Emeralds High School Hockey co-op this season. After years of success teaming together at the youth house hockey level, the three towns of Newberry, Munising, and Manistique, along with their local associations and schools, launched a new high school varsity co-op program to compete at the MHSAA level.

The holiday shopping season is upon us, starting in one of the most community minded ways. The first holiday bazaars of the year were held last Saturday, November 12, with both the Trenary Lions Club and the Munising United Methodist Church hosting independent events on opposite sides of the county.

The Bay College Norse Women’s Basketball Team (2-2) earned a split for the second weekend in a row using a strong shooting night to overcome the Mesabi Range Norse (0-3) by a final of 7950 on Friday night. On Saturday they fell in a closely contested battle with Madison College (2-4) 44-40 in a low-scoring affair.

A special season came to an end on Saturday, as the visiting Merrill Vandals upset the Munising Mustangs 22-20 in Mustang Stadium. Despite the snow and the cold, the Munising defense couldn’t have started any hotter, forcing a fumble and a threeand- out in the first two possessions.

The North Central High School football team faced its first challenge of the season on Saturday, but pulled away from the Marion Eagles, 36-12, in Lower Michigan. The win moves the Jets into the state championship game next Saturday at the Superior Dome.
