The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has announced its Players of the Week for the games of November 1112 and four student-athletes from three different programs. Ryan O’Hara (Bowling Green) earned Forward of theWeek, while Will Zmolek (Bemidji State) and Mattias Sholl (Bemidji State) were the Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week, respectively. Joey Larson (Northern Michigan) was selected as the Rookie of the Week.

Give the new Alger County commissioners a shot

Alger County saw massive change to the county commission this election cycle, with three incumbents totaling over 40 years of experience losing to mostly inexperienced challengers. Missing out on the experience of Catherine Pullen, Katherine “Kappy” Laing and Jerry Doucette will bring change to the county commission and sometimes change can be a little uncomfortable or scary. But as a county, we must be careful not to accidentally disrespect the new commissioners coming in.

It’s Time to Shake Up Higher Education

Michigan rightly prides itself on having some fine public universities. The flagship school, the University of Michigan, is considered by virtually all college rankers to be among the nation’s five best public universities. An objective examination of Wolverine State schools, however, shows several weaknesses. There is apparent severe overcapacity accompanying sharply declining enrollments, which demographic factors suggest likely will not reverse soon. Additionally, outside observers rate most Michigan public universities just so-so in quality. Perhaps the time has come to consider a new model for funding these universities, letting what Joseph Schumpeter termed “creative destruction” in dynamic competitive markets operate in higher education.

Michigan Senators Pleased With $8 Million Headed To Michigan Tech

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow applauded the U.S. Department of Energy’s award to Michigan Technological University $8,137,783 to develop and advance critical technologies and processes needed to recycle and reuse electric vehicle batteries. This federal investment comes from the bipartisan infrastructure law that Peters and Stabenow helped enact a year ago.
