Rock River Township will be shifting its approach regarding a controversial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policy after receiving an opinion from the township attorney. Roger Zappa, who serves as a civil and government attorney for numerous municipalities in Alger County, said that while a DEI policy can be added, it should be moved forward as a resolution and not as a part of the township’s master plan.

A tribal court judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought against the Sault Tribe Board of Directors that would have cancelled the upcoming tribal election and install former board member DJ Hoffman as chair. The written opinion, dated Nov. 4, 2022, by Tribal Court Judge Jocelyn K. Fabry explained that because the Board had determined the Tribe’s laws required and permitted the members to vote on a Chairperson, the Court did not have authority to stop the members from voting.

Au Train Township officials are wondering which direction to go after an unusually low turnout for the municipality’s most recent survey. Just 70 people responded to the township’s recreation plan survey, which is less than a third of the responses from the last recreation survey in 2012.

It was a quick and mostly presentation filled meeting on Monday, but it ended with much discussion over what the future would look like for the Alger County Commission. The Alger County Commission Committee of the Whole on Monday, November 14 was the first meeting after the election, when commissioners Catherine Pullen, Katherine “Kappy” Laing and commission chair Jerry Doucette lost their reelection bids.
