Mustangs starts season strong in Newberry

Munising Coach Matt Mattson spent the early portion of his team’s season opener in Newberry Tuesday night pleading with his players. Things looked rough. They normally do on opening night. But a young squad with five sophomores in the rotation stumbled out of the blocks. Four starters had multiple fouls in the first half. Shots weren’t falling, and the two teams had more turnovers than points in the first quarter. Munising only led 7-3 at the end of one. Then something clicked, and Mattson’s message was heard.

Husky, ‘Cat earn CCHA honors before big series

With a huge homeand- home series between the Northern Michigan Wildcats and Michigan Tech Huskies this weekend, both squads brought home a November Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) November Players of the Month. David Silye (Minnesota State) was named Forward of the Month, while Brett Thorne (Michigan Tech) earned Defenseman of the Month honors. Christian Stoever (Bowling Green) was the Goaltender of the Month and Beni Halasz (Northern Michigan) repeated as Rookie of the Month.

Successful holiday week for Emeralds hockey

It was a busy but successful holiday week for the Manistique Emeralds Varsity Hockey Co-op. The Emeralds picked up their first win of the season by beating the Cheboygan Chiefs 7-2 in St. Ignace last Tuesday. The Emeralds brought that momentum below the bridge, competing at the “Thanksgiving Showcase” in Adrian and Jackson. Taking on the two host teams, the Emeralds came home with a win and a draw in their first big weekend of the season.

Meet the teams

The Munising Mustangs held their winter sports Meet the Teams night on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The event was a chance for parents, coaches and student-athletes to get on the same page with expectations, financial requirements, sign up for concessions duties and get excited about the new season.

Munising supports Negaunee football

The Negaunee Miners Football team got a booster shot of U.P. Power on their way through Munising on Thursday, Nov. 24. The team got a full first responder escort with roughly 75 people spread along M28 to support the only U.P. team to make Ford Field and the finals this year. Munising School Board member and Northern Michigan University hockey superfan Greg Pond also gave the team the famous kazoo serenade before the Miners headed on their way in a performance usually reserved for the Wildcats hockey team.

Munising School Public Library notes

Alger Reads, the library book club will not meet in December, but are already looking ahead to the January book selection Wintering by Katherine May. An intimate and revelatory book, Wintering explores the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. Alger Reads meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the library and all are welcome to attend.
