TaleSpinners Storytime resumes this coming Monday, January 23rd at 10:30 a.m.. Join Ms. Kristin for stories, songs, and crafts about chameleons! Starting in February, recurring once a month, a Park Ranger from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will be at Talespinners Storytime with their Read with a Ranger program. The first one is scheduled for Monday, February 27.

On January 13 at approximately 9:30 a.m., a 911 call was received at the Alger County Sheriff’s Office reporting a snowmobile accident on Trail #8 near Shingleton. The investigation concluded that Wendy Batterbee, a 44-year-old female from downstate Birch Run, was traveling east on Trail #8 and failed to negotiate a curve in the trail.

If you’re following along from last month, we discussed the importance of Forest Management Plans (FMP’s). FMP’s are an inventory and analysis of what your forest looks like and what species are present. FMP’s can also help identify trees that may be infected by insect or disease and opportunities to improve wildlife habitat and also recommendations to work towards a healthier forest. An FMP is a guidance tool for landowners to follow to assist them in meeting their goals for their properties.

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained constant over the month at 4.3 percent, according to data released today by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Employment in the state edged down by 1,000, while unemployment was unchanged over the month, resulting in a minor workforce reduction of 1,000 during December.

In a rare move, Ron LeJeune failed to be reappointed to the Rock River Township Planning Commission. No municipality in Alger County has failed to reappoint a member of its planning commission that has wanted to return to the position since at least 2019.
