What Are Cover Crops?

Have you heard about cover crops but not aren’t sure what that term means, what purpose they serve, or how to use them within your garden or agricultural cropping system? Cover crops are a “temporary” crop grown to improve soil health and fertility; they are not grown for consumption. Cover cropping has been a strategy used by farmers since ancient times and there are many reasons to incorporate this farming technique today. Cover crops can increase soil fertility and organic matter, improve soil structure and water infiltration, prevent soil erosion, benefit pollinator species, and limit pest and disease outbreaks.

Burt Township Schools superintendent notes

Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite topic, public school funding! The Burt Township School District is primarily funded in two unique ways. The first way we are funded is through our property tax revenues. You may think to yourself though, that’s not very unique, but it is. See, we’re “out of formula” which means we have so few students we choose not to collect per pupil allowances from the state. Instead, we collect money on non-homestead property taxes. That is, second and third homes as well as local businesses. The amount that we collect is greater than what we would get if we chose to be “in formula” and collect per pupil dollars from the state.

Munising School Public Library news

Federal and Michigan tax forms and instructions are available in the library for filers. Additional forms can be printed at the cost of 15 cent per page. Xerox copies can be made in the library as well for the same amount. In addition, the library recently updated all of the public access computers and the software on them and have added wireless printing for those who need to print from a device. Scanning to email is a breeze as are color prints and copies. With all these easy to use services and lightning fast internet, the library is truly the place to get your work done.

Manager of the Munising Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market Receives Certification

The Alger County Chamber of Commerce, along with the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA), is proud to announce that Market Manager, Hilary Ludecke recently completed the MIFMA Market Manager Certificate Program on Wednesday, February 15. A total of 22 individuals participated in the program and were certified, making Ludecke one of 394 total individuals who have been certified since the program’s inception in 2011.
