Nebel is Mr. U.P. Basketball

The celebrations continue for Munising Mustang basketball, as Kane Nebel has been named the 2023 Mr. U.P. Basketball by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, naming him the best basketball player on the court for the entire region. He is the first Mr. U.P. Basketball winner from Munising.

Businesses closed for holiday Courts are closed in observance of Good Friday, the first business day before Easter. Multiple restaurants and offices will have changed hours for the holiday, most notably Altran not offering rides on Sunday. Check with the individual businesses before travelling long distances.

South Shore Fishing Association presents derby proceeds to Rescue 21

South Shore Fishing Association Vice President Jesse Bianchi presents a check for $15,329 to Alger County Undersheriff Steve Blank on Thursday, March 30. Ross Anthony and Pam Basil of the SSFA join members of Rescue 21 outside the Alger County Courthouse for the presentation. The money was raised through the inaugural Munising Bay Ice Fishing Derby in February, which was organized through the SSFA as a fundraiser for Rescue 21. Local organizations donated prizes and raffle items while Rescue 21 volunteers assisted in the event gameday operations. The check was presented after all expenditures and prize payouts were completed.

I remember the day still, April 20, 1970, when as a ninth grader my whole school took part in the first Earth Day. Each home room decorated their room’s door with an Earth friendly theme. In preparation for the day, we learned about air and water pollution, population growth, and conservation. We created skits projecting what the Earth of the future would look like. It was time when Americans joined together to talk about the future of our Earth.
