Norway / Munising - Linda (Prato) Depew of Norway, and formerly of Munising, has passed away after a short illness at Maryhill Manor nursing home in Niagara, Wisc. on April 20, 2023.
In Michigan, as the ice and snow on lakes thaw this spring, it is not uncommon for people to come across dead fish and other aquatic animals. While it may be alarming, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources explains that this is a normal occurrence as harsh winter conditions can cause fish, turtles, frogs, toads, and crayfish to die.
Both of Munising’s grocery stores — Bob’s IGA in Downtown Munising and Family Fare on the Eastern side of M-28 — have sold to Houghton-based grocery store Pat’s Foods. Terms of the sales were not released, but none of the roughly 45 employees at the grocery stores will be laid off as a result of the sale.
Superior Central alum Parker Maki added plate support in the Bay College Norse baseball team’s recent series with Delta College April 13-15, when the Norse took two of five from the Pioneers. It was the first collegiate baseball series of the year in the Upper Peninsula.
Thirteen Upper Peninsula residents competed at the 2023 Boston Marathon on Monday, April 17, one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. Six men and seven women completed the 26.2 mile course, with Marquette’s Cory Fries being the first to finish of local runners.
Bowerman is part of the 100 win club and twice qualified for the MHSAA Individual State Wresting Finals. A multisport athlete, he is the fourth student athlete from Munising and fifth from Alger County to officially move on to compete at the collegiate level, but the first outside of football. The Muskies are a NCAA Division III school. Multiple family members of Bowerman have graduated and competed for Lakeland. He plans on studying computer science.
The Munising Mustang track and field team is looking forward to getting in competition. With a large team and notable returners from last year’s regional championship squads, this is another opportunity for a successful season in Munising.
Bay College Athletic Director Matt Johnson has announced the hiring of Todd Ciochetto as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach. “We are thrilled to welcome Todd to the Bay Norse Family,” said Johnson.
