Alger Conservation wins grant for deer habitat

Alger County will receive a portion of over $100,000 in grant funding for deer habitat improvement projects from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. According to the press release, the project will impact a parcel of land in western Alger County by turning old timber trails into environments rich in food for deer.

Munising High School hosts flag ceremony thanks to local youth tribal council

On May 3, a Manistique tribal drumming circle traveled with a grandfather drum to honor Munising High School. An assembly was held to receive a tribal flag.

Landslide at Hickory Street

A major landslide closed the south end of Hickory Street in Munising in the early hours of Thursday, May 4, 2023. Over a dozen trees came were completely dislodged in an event that appears to be from too much water in the hill.

Hiawatha Forest’s Thompson named MUCC Conservationist of the Year

US Forest Service Terrestrial Ecologist Paul Thompson (right) was recently awarded the Michigan United Conservation Clubs’ (MUCC) Forest & Park Conservationist of the Year award. Thompson was nominated by the Straits Area Sportsmen’s Club for his work across both the east and west units of Hiawatha National Forest.
