“Hey, what’s that green fungus growing on my tree?” “Is my tree sick”? “How do I get rid of that stuff?” There are many life forms that inhabit tree bark, not to mention all the other parts of a tree. For example, oaks can host hundreds of species from many taxa.

The Seney National Wildlife Refuge had a groundbreaking ceremony and open house on May 10th, 2023 to celebrate a new visitor center for the area. “We’re thrilled to invite the public to join us for this exciting event,” said Seney National Wildlife Refuge Manager, Sara Siekierski.

Anglers fishing Lake Superior can help the Michigan Department of Natural Resources evaluate the splake fishery by reporting marked splake. Splake, which are a hybrid cross between lake trout and brook trout, have been stocked in Lake Superior most years since 1971, with annual stocking since 1990.

One of the fourth grade classes at Mather Elementary participated in a mock trial at the Alger County Courthouse on Wednesday, May 10. The students were able to see how the legal system worked in a controlled environment, with numerous elected officials and county law enforcement and court staff assisting in the project.

Over 100 people were at the Munising School Public Library to celebrate the 2023 HomeTown Art Fair, which showcases artwork made by Munising students in each grade. While most of the art focused on two-dimensional drawings and paintings, some pieces were sculptures made with ceramics or other materials.

Welcome home Ryder James Matthews! Ryder was born on Monday, May 8, 2023 to Travis Matthews and Dannie Hebert of Munising. This is the couple’s first child. Ryder was seven pounds, 12 ounces and 21 inches long at birth. The baby and mother have enjoyed a healthy first week together surrounded by friends and family. Congratulations!

Victoria Wus (left) presents a check for $1,150 to Ashley Miller of Wetmore for winning the Munising Moose Lodge’s Michigan Progressive Jackpot. She won the pot on Monday, May 8. Munising Moose Lodge bingo has produced multiple $1,000 winners this year in what has been one of the most successful bingo seasons ever for the organization.
