NMU to play soccer game on Mackinac Island

The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team will now join the Wildcat volleyball team on Mackinac Island this fall, as the Green and Gold will meet the Northwood Timberwolves on August 19 at 5 p.m. for a historic exhibition taking place at Great Turtle Park. The game will be played on the same field used by Mackinac Island High School when they host Munising Baptist, Big Bay de Noc and Grand Marais for Northern Lights League soccer games.

New forest supervisor joins Hiawatha National Forest

Eastern Regional Forester Gina Owens has announced the selection of Shannon Rische as the forest supervisor for the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she has served as acting forest supervisor since January 2023.

Mobile sauna visits Grand Marais

A pair moving back to the Upper Peninsula have brought a new business with them, literally. Brandon Frisk and Shawnee Rajala have opened up Sauna on Kumma, a mobile Finnish sauna.

Animal Shelter eviction continues

The fight over the Alger County Animal Shelter was back in the 93rd District Court on Wednesday, June 21, but any immediate action will have to wait until another government acts. The Alger County government and the Humane Society of Alger County are still fighting over the eviction notice that would remove the shelter from the county-owned building in Munising.

Splash In a grand success

The Grand Marais community hosted the 24th annual Splash-In on the Bay, an annual event showcasing seaplanes and amphibious aircraft from around the Midwest. Roughly 15 planes participated in various contests in front of roughly 500 airplane enthusiasts.

Immel, Miller, Fischer trio wins Father’s Day Tournament

The trio of Dale Immel, Blake Miller and Ryan Fischer played strong all weekend to win the 2023 Father’s Day Scramble Starting strong, the trio led from the first hole and was the first-day leaders with 60, holding a onestroke lead over the teams of Baij, Baij and Ake and former champions Mahoski, Mannisto and Tweedale. Sunday’s round saw more good shots for the eventual champions, as they were one of only three of the 84 total teams on the day to not register a fiveshot hole.

Players prep for U.P. Football All Star Game

Members of the black team are practicing plays on Tuesday, June 20 outside the Superior Dome in Marquette. Players from across the U.P. are on the Northern Michigan University campus to participate in this year’s all star game with multiple selections from Munising, Superior Central and Mid Pen. Players help in volunteer efforts, learn skills and compete in skill events before the game on Saturday at 1 p.m.. It will also be broadcasted on WLUC TV6.

It was a rare scenario for Munising Mustangs Head Coach Terry Kienitz and graduated seniors Kane Nebel and Cully Trzeciak. Despite winning a state championship, there was a chance they could end their 2022-23 basketball campaigns with a loss in the U.P. All Star Basketball Game presented by the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.

The Michigan House voted 79-30 in favor of House Bill 4515, which aims to remove the expiration date of Michigan’s off-road vehicle (ORV) licensing program. The ORV licensing program provides owners with the opportunity to engage in outdoor recreational activities while also contributing to the maintenance of trails and infrastructure necessary for these experiences. Currently, the program is set to end by the conclusion of this year.
