Munising’s Cota leads Norse

Munising alumna Hattie Cota led the Bay College Norse at its first cross country event of the season at the St. Norbert College’s Tom Barry Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 2. Cota finished 96 of 130 runners, but was the first Norse across the line in the women’s race with a time of 23:51.54.

The Superior Central Cougars were shut out by the host Pickford Panthers last Thursday by a score of 68-0. The Cougars travel to Rapid River tonight with kickoff at 7 p.m.. The Rockets are 1-1 on the season after losing 58-0 to Rudyard last week.

Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk draws massive crowds

Over 35,000 people crossed the Mackinac Bridge on foot, September 4, for the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk. The Mackinac Bridge Walk is an annual event that celebrates Labor Day. The walk is held on the Mackinac Bridge, the third-longest suspension span in the United States, which spans the Straits of Mackinac connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The event has been held for over 60 years, and attracts thousands of people from all over the world.

Grants available for invasive species projects

Michigan’s Invasive Species Grant Program is now accepting proposals for the 2023 funding cycle, with an anticipated $3.6 million available to applicants. The program – a joint effort of the Michigan departments of Natural Resources; Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; and Agriculture and Rural Development – is part of a statewide initiative launched in 2014 to help prevent, detect and control invasive species in Michigan.
