PLEASE NOTE: We will be closing on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m., NOT 8:00 p.m., until further notice due to short staffing. We are still open until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Fall Phantasm continues to grow

Phantasm continues to grow Alger County residents taking larger part in festival The Fall Phantasm, a live art and performance festival, continued to grow for its third straight year, with people from all over the region enjoying the event held at Lakenenland on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Coffee With A Cop at Gallery

Members of the Michigan State Police and the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore law enforcement spoke with the public at a “Faith & Blue” Coffee With A Cop event at Gallery Coffee Company on Monday, Oct. 9. Leadership from both organizations answered questions from the public over a cup of joe in promoting transparency and opening lines of communication between law enforcement and the public.

“Practice your escape plan” during fire prevention week

National Fire Prevention Week commemorates the anniversary of two of the most devastating fires in United States history: the great Chicago Fire and the Peshtigo Fire. Both fires began around 9:00 p.m. on October 8, 1871 and continued through the next day. The Chicago Fire took the lives of 250 people, left another 10,000 homeless and consumed 17,400 structures over 2,000 acres. The wildfire in Peshtigo was the worst of the two fires, yet many people have never heard of it. Within one day, 1,200 people perished in the Peshtigo conflagration. Seventeen towns were consumed and 1.5 million acres were scorched.

Color and Craft Show fills the house

The gymnasium at Burt Township School was jammed packed with vendors and crafters for the annual Grand Marais Women’s Club Color and Craft Show in Grand Marais on Saturday, Oct. 7. The event had 32 vendors and roughly 250 attendees from all over the area. The money raised from the event will be used by the club for different charitable efforts in Grand Marais while funds from the lunch will benefit the school.

Rest of Alger canvassers resign

The Alger County Board of Canvassers, the local electors tasked with verifying the county elections, are looking for a new set of partisan electors for the second time in a matter of months. Republican Richard Hale and Democrat Kay Powers will no longer be on the board after turning in their resignations earlier this month.

The annual Munising Public Schools homecoming parade is today, Oct. 13 at 3:30 p.m. in downtown Munising. The parade will go down Superior and Elm. All are welcome to attend, but those looking to avoid the parade are encouraged to take other routes.

Graveside services for Patricia Ann McQuisten will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Deacon Tom Moseley officiating. Pat died at her home on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at the age of 87. Her complete obituary may be found at bowermanfuneralhome.net
