High school hockey season ends in Soo

The third season of local high school varsity hockey came to a sudden end against a familiar face in Sault Ste. Marie last week. After earning an opening round playoff win last Tuesday against Kingsford with an incredible late game comeback, the magic ran out for the Manistique Emeralds against the Blue Devils and star goaltender Camden Labadie. A former Tahquamenon Area Youth Hockey Association (TAYHA) teammate of many Newberry players on the Emeralds, Labadie became one of the top senior goalies in the state. He showed why when he slowed down the Emeralds in a 4-1 win for the Soo, propelling them to this week’s MHSAA Regional Championship.

Ken Fulcher

Ken Fulcher passed away unexpectedly on February 15, 2024. Born on August 28, 1949 to parents Truman Fulcher and Mary Louise Chartier in Munising, MI, Ken spent his childhood on the shore of Lake Superior with his 10 siblings in a room surrounded by his father’s radio equipment. The youngest of seven sons, Ken skipped an inevitable draft notice and enlisted in the army to serve his country in Vietnam upon graduation from Munising High School. Not one for school, Ken showed an aptitude for working with his hands and all things mechanical. He rode that aptitude through tests he always said he “had no business passing” and was given a Military Occupational Specialty as a uh-1 “Huey” helicopter mechanic.

Lady Cougars come up short with Carney-Nadeau

The wins may not be coming as much as they may like, but Superior Central girls basketball head coach Skip Rutter is certainly pleased with how his Lady Cougars are playing, at least on one side of the ball. S-C lost at home to Carney-Nadeau on Monday, Feb. 19, but there were still some positives from the 55-14 setback. “We may run out of time this year to get where we need to be offensively, but we are working very hard to get better defensively,” Rutter said. “And, that showed a little bit against Carney, although the final score does not reflect it. We had a pretty decent couple quarters defensively. We held one of their leading scores to three points. Our goal is to get better on both ends of the floor and try to steal a district game.”
