Hockey hands out the hardware

With the third season of local high school hockey complete, the 2023-2024 Manistique Emeralds came together to celebrate their season. The annual endof- season awards banquet was hosted at the Munising High School on Monday. The ceremony honored top performers from this past season and also served as a farewell to Coach John Nutkins, who has announced he will no longer be coaching the program. This photo study in black and white compliments his poignant essays detailing the last three years in the Upper Peninsula, where he moved after leaving Metro Detroit. Readers are given a ringside seat to his new life in the slow lane with this beautifully constructed book which shows how life in the UP with his beloved Greyhounds has been anything but mundane.

The Frayed Rope: A Lesson in Maintenance, Love, and Faith

There is a story about a monastery in Europe perched high on a cliff several hundred feet in the air. The only way to reach the monastery was to be suspended in a basket which was pulled to the top by several monks who pulled and tugged with all their strength. Obviously the ride up the steep cliff in that basket was terrifying. One tourist got exceedingly nervous about half-way up as he noticed that the rope by which he was suspended was old and frayed. With a trembling voice he asked the monk who was riding with him in the basket how often they changed the rope. The monk thought for a moment and answered brusquely, “Whenever it breaks.”

Michigan Statehood

On January 26, 1837, Michigan became the 26th state to join the United States of America. It was admitted as a free state by Andrew Jackson, who also oversaw the addition of the slave state of Arkansas the year prior. While lower Michigan and the eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula had been a territory since 1805, when determining state lines the area west of Munising was included as part of a deal to relinquish a strip of land in the south to Ohio.

Sault Tribe Health to Hold Munising Town Hall to Gather Feedback on Improved Health Services

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will hold a town hall meeting in Munising later this month to gather public input that will shape the future of the healthcare services it provides to the Eastern Upper Peninsula region. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 27, at the Munising Tribal Center from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.

Softball Club

Munising 4-H Baseball and Sotball Club Registration Open

Munising Baseball/Softball program, formerly with Alger Parks and Recreation, is in the process of transitioning from Little League to 4-H. The former board members are eagerly embracing this transition and are steadfast in their dedication to assisting everyone through the process. For over a century, 4-H has stood as a cornerstone of youth development nationwide, endorsed by the USDA for its commitment to promoting healthy living. The 4-H, healthy living mission is dedicated to empowering youth and families with access to opportunities that foster optimal physical, social, and emotional well-being. Registration for Munising’s baseball, softball, and T-ball teams is now open for players aged 5 to 14 as of January 1, 2024. All skill levels are encouraged to participate, and registration will be available from March 1 to March 31, 2024. No enrollments will be accepted after the March 31 deadline. The season, spanning six weeks, will commence in May and conclude in June, with specific days and times to be determined. The registration costs vary by category: T-ball players are priced at $20, Minors, Majors, and Girls Softball at $35, and Juniors at $40. Notably, this year introduces a family cap of $55, meaning families will only need to pay fees for the first two players from the same household. Families registering more than two players will only be required to pay the two highest registration fees, with additional players being free of charge.
