Under a bright sun, blue skies, and cool temperatures, the annual Larissa A. Vartti Cross Country Invitational was held on August 20 at the Valley Spur course in Munising. Eleven teams toed the line on the hilly, tree-covered trail. Under perfect running conditions, the home team fared very well in this inaugural meet of the season. Leading the way for the Mustang boys and capturing first place was Danny Goss, who covered the 5k course in a time of 16 minutes and 58 seconds. Following Danny was Trevor Nolan in second place with a time of 17:54. Rounding out the top seven were Blake Lakosky (12th, 20:13), Nolan Dolaskie (18th, 21:33), Zach Lindquist (19th, 21:16), Dylan Adkinson (23rd, 21:33), and Nate Petersen (30th, 23:38). With a team score of 52 points, the Mustangs came home with the firstplace trophy, distancing second place Engadine with 89 points. The girls ran a bit short-handed, but came through with a fine finish. The trio of Dayne Behning (10th, 25:23), Kate Mattson (11th, 25:24), and Olivia Cotey (12th, 25:24) successfully ran as a pack. Elizabeth Wing (30th, 36:00) rounded out the four-member team. For their efforts and using modified scoring, they finished in third place with 98 points, just 9 points away from the first-place team, Stephenson, and two points from the second-place team, North Central.
