Despite penalties, Emeralds take fourth straight win

Almost everything was against the Manistique Emeralds Varsity co-op in their home contest against the Big Rapids Cardinals on Saturday. Great opportunities to score were just off the mark. Thirteen penalties were called against the Emeralds, compared to just three on the Cardinals. Multiple Emeralds players spent more time in the box than on the ice. They were outnumbered for nearly half the game. Toward the end of the game, Head Coach John Nutkins got ejected and is currently suspended as a result.

Munising School Public Library News

The weather might have made it difficult to get to the library lately, but there’s still plenty of material online to keep you busy even in the worst of weather. Remember, you can always borrow audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines, or music so long as you have your library card and a screen!

Free Skate for All!

Thanks to a generous donation from Alger County Communities that Care (AC3) anyone who wants to can enjoy ice skating in the months to come. Alger Centennial Arena had already placed ‘Free Skate’ on their schedule, meaning anyone could skate during those times with no cost for admission.

SNOW!

We finally have that snow cover we were looking for! Last week’s storm left us a decent snowfall, with between 8” and 12” of snow on the ground at the start of the week according to the National Weather Service, creating fair to good ski conditions and hope for a chance to finally enjoy winter sports fully – eventually.

Women’s Snowshoe Hike

Join the Alger Conservation District and Michigan State University Extension for their 2024 Women in the Woods snowshoe series! Come be a part of a community of women who appreciate the forests around them while getting fresh air and exercise to fight off cabin fever. The first trail of the season will be on Thursday, February 1st, at Valley Spur Cross Country Trail in Munising. The hike runs from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.. In the weeks to which follow, the trail will take hikers to Blueberry Ridge Pathway in Marquette on February 8th and to Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming on February 15th.
