Jan. 4, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service is making financial assistance available for Michigan agricultural producers to purchase seasonal high tunnels, often referred to as hoop houses. The assistance is available to Michigan producers statewide who want to start or expand high tunnel production.

Brian Keith Mellon, 62 of Menominee passed away on Monday January 8, 2024 at his home. Brian was born on June 5th, 1961 in Iron Mountain, MI to David and Beverly (Gering) Mellon. Brian graduated from Munising High School and went on to Northern Michigan University where he was a member of the football team, he was proud of his 1981 Northern Michigan football team being inducted into the Northern Michigan hall of fame. He worked for Waupaca Foundry as an electrical foreman until his retirement in 2023. Brian was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and being out on the lake. He loved all sports, especially football. Brian further enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with his family and dogs. He was especially excited and happy upon becoming a recent grandfather to Ava who he loved very much.
The Munising Public School Board of Education met on January 15, 2024. The meeting opened with an election of school board members for the coming year and got right down to business, moving quickly through the consent agenda.
The City Commission met on January 15, 2024. Most of the meeting was taken up with the report from the recent audit. Overall, the audit proved favorable, showing a slow but steady increase in the city’s funding.
Stress and anxiety can permeate at the most inconvenient of times. In our fastpaced society, most certainly don’t have time to add one more thing to a mounting list of tasks. Days are filled with a list of things to get done. It can be hard to focus on the here and now as we orient to what is coming next. The next appointment. The next meeting.

Join the Alger Conservation District and Michigan State University Extension for their 2024 Women in the Woods snowshoe series! Come be a part of a community of women who appreciate the forests around them while getting fresh air and exercise to fight off cabin fever. The first trail of the season will be on Thursday, February 1st, at Valley Spur Cross Country Trail in Munising. The hike runs from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.. In the weeks to which follow, the trail will take hikers to Blueberry Ridge Pathway in Marquette on February 8th and to Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming on February 15th.
Donald Henry Cromell of Wilmington, Ohio entered the presence of the Lord Nov. 17, 2023. He passed at age 81 at home surrounded by loving family including his wife of 60 years, Linda, and sons Mark and Tim.

The school district is getting a new school bus, but that highlights another issue: someone to drive it. There are currently four drivers available. The backup driver who used to act as a substitute on the existing four routes just resigned.
