The annual firefighters competition was won by the hometown crowd, as the Rock River Township Volunteer Fire Department defeated Au Train Township and Munising Township for the title. Set up in a round robin, the RRVFD beat both townships to take the victory. All three departments celebrated the opportunity to compete on Sunday, Aug. 6 in front of the fair crowd.
The annual Chatham Homecoming Queen competition was Saturday, August 5 on the main stage at the Alger County Fair. Three girls competed for the title this year.
The annual Little Miss Pageant brought 37 competitors from around Alger County to the main stage of the fair on Friday, Aug. 4. Divided into four age-based divisions, the girls performed a group musical number before individual presentations.

In the closest finish ever for western Alger County’s only running race, Christopher Russelburg beat out Ekagra Agarwal by 0.01 seconds for the overall title. The pair had over a 2:24 lead over third-overall Kyle Hoffner.

Lindsey Slifka won the Alger County Fair’s 2023 Homemaker of the Year award. It was her first time winning the top accolade for exhibitors.

Speed events greatly increased for the county fair this year at the renovated horse arena. High point award winners were broken into three different divisions. Leah Moisio took the 5-13 division, Tara LeClair took the 14-18 division and Brooke Harris won the 19+ division. High point awards were given to the riders who had the most accumulated points in each age division across both days of running, according to organizers.
Al Iho was the best of nine competitors in the first Trivia Game Show at the Alger County Fair. The Trenary native won a 50” flatscreen television and $55 in gift certificates for winning his qualifying round and the final competition.
