A host of holiday events hit Alger County last weekend, ranging from parades, charitable efforts, “shop local” programs and numerous opportunities to see Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Munising Beacon proudly presents, once a month, another “Artist Profile”, a series highlighting local artists and community members that have a passion for bringing beauty into Alger County. Have you ever ventured into the Gallery Coffee Company here in Munising and wondered who took the photographs that are displayed throughout the building? One of those artists, Patrick Hugener, owner of Head In The Clouds Photography, is the subject of this month’s “Artist Biography.” Hugener grew up in Fenton, Mich.

As the holiday season approaches, if you are looking for the perfect weekend family activity, the Hiawatha National Forest would like to suggest Holiday tree gathering. Permits are available online at recreation. gov for the holiday season, just $5 a piece plus a $2.50 service fee. Purchase information and details about designated cutting areas, dates and types of trees that may be cut can be found at: www.recreation. gov/tree-permits/hiawatha.

The holiday shopping season is upon us, starting in one of the most community minded ways. The first holiday bazaars of the year were held last Saturday, November 12, with both the Trenary Lions Club and the Munising United Methodist Church hosting independent events on opposite sides of the county.

City employees install the holiday decorations to the lightpoles in Munising’s downtown district. Lights and banners are up to celebrate the holidays.

Alger County Veteran Services Director Becky Johns was named the 2022 Veteran Service Provider of the Year by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. “Being awarded the Veteran Service Provider of the Year for the State of Michigan is a huge honor,” Johns said.
