Honoring Heroes with a New Fountain: A Fresh Look for the All-Veterans Memorial

There is a new look for the All-Veterans Memorial at the Munising City Park! Since dressing up the memorial with a new outside fence a couple of years ago, some of the members of Vietnam Veterans of Alger County Chapter 237 felt the centerpiece should be more attractive. With the agreement of all of the members, funds were transferred to the All-Veterans Memorial for this project which culminated on September 11, 2024, with the installation of a new wrap-around fountain centerpiece. This wrap includes all of the different service insignias and was installed on the anniversary of 9/11 by the designers, Icon Signs out of Ishpeming, Michigan.

Reintroducing Trooper Tom: The Heartbeat of Community Engagement in the Upper Peninsula

The Michigan State Police has a smiling face at the forefront of community outreach, and it’s a familiar one. Trooper Thomas Kinnunen, affectionately known as “Trooper Tom,” has recently been appointed as one of sixteen Community Service Troopers (CST) in Michigan. With a role dedicated to bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public, Trooper Tom is making a lasting impact on the communities he serves. The Munising Beacon first introduced Trooper Tom to readers back in January of 2024.

Locals Join Thousands, Including Lt. Governor Gilchrist, for Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk

Local residents Marissa Ackerman Graves and her husband Mike Graves, from Munising, and Elisha Cripe and her husband Scott Cripe, from Au Train, made the approximate 120mile trip to St. Ignace on Labor Day to participate in the 2024 Mackinac Bridge Walk. They were among an estimated 30,000 people who took part in the event, which included a special appearance by Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II whose participation in the event demonstrates its significance as a unifying experience for Michiganders.
