A Year of Achievements and Community Connection Reflecting on the past year, the Munising Moose Lodge celebrates numerous successes and community contributions. The year started with impactful fundraising events, including the Carmen Kee Fundraiser, Peter Benzing Fundraiser, and the 1st Sundays Breakfast Fundraiser, making a positive impact on various causes.

Munising’s Earth Fest 2024 was held throughout the month of April with many community members attending. In its second year, Earth Fest’s partnership between Alger County Renewable Energy Solutions and Munising School Public Library expanded to include the Gallery Coffee Co. with sponsorship from the Michigan Environmental Council.

Members of the Munising High School Key Club, along with their advisor Hilary Ludecke, participated in the annual Clear Lake Education cleanup project. Despite unpredictable weather - including a brief snowfall after sunshine - the group worked diligently to clean cabins, the nurse station, bathrooms, showers, haul wood, set up the dock, transport kayaks, and tend to yard work. Mimi Klotz graciously provided a delicious lunch for the hardworking volunteers. The Key Club’s efforts were supported by Kiwanians Jim Rodgers, Cathy Weisinger, Ken Theresa Struble, and Anne O’Neill. Proud parents are commended for their children’s dedication to community service.

This year’s Fundraiser was the most successful to date, despite there being no ice on the Bay and no fishing to be done. Through the generous donations from local and UP businesses for raffle items as well as the amazing support of the community more than $17,00.00 dollars were raised to be used for new and existing equipment upgrades to enhance Rescue 21’s lifesaving mission. All rescue 21 members are unpaid volunteers from various walks of life here in Alger county.

Cori-Ann Cearley’s journey from a smalltown upbringing to a successful hotel owner in Munising, Michigan, is a testament to her unwavering dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to her community. Born and raised in Munising, Cearley was immersed in the hospitality industry from a young age. Her parents, who owned numerous businesses including the Northern Motel (later renamed Pictured Rocks Inn and Suites), provided her with invaluable insights into business management and instilled in her the values of hard work and dedication.

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians on Wednesday announced that it had filed its opening brief in an appeal of the 2023 Great Lakes Fishing Decree, arguing the decree violated their treaty rights and that the tribe had been excluded from negotiations.

The Summer Reading Program will begin in June and run through August! Keep an eye out for more information coming soon.
