The Alger Community Recycling Committee is organizing a free e-waste and freon appliance collection today and tomorrow, Friday and Saturday 16-17 at Munising Middle/High School. The event will allow Alger County residents a chance to dispose of various electronics ranging from radios to copy machines, video games to VCRs. Refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners will also be accepted for UPPCO bill credits. A $5 fee will be required for televisions, CRT monitors and a $2 fee for flat screen monitors. Collection times are 4 p.m.-8 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

Munising Marketplace, Fire Hall projects continue

The Munising City Commission approved two economic development zones to further the progress of two downtown developments. Conducting public hearings at the start of the regular bimonthly meeting on Wednesday, June 7 at Munising City Hall, the city commission voted in favor of creating an Obsolete Property Rehabilitation District for the old city fire hall at the corner of Munising Avenue and Lynn Street and a Commercial Redevelopment District for the Munising Marketplace project on Superior Street between Birch and Maple Streets.

The annual Pictured Rocks Days, or also known asYoopers Ride Free Days, will be in Munising this Saturday and Sunday, June 10-11. The event is one of the largest festivals of the year in Alger County and will feature over 100 vendors near Bayshore Park. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday.

Child victim cases hit circuit court

Three cases regarding child victims were on the docket for 11th Circuit Court motion day on Tuesday, June 6 in Munising. Matthew Cooley, the second man caught in a cybersting organized by the Alger County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement groups in the Upper Peninsula, was arraigned on two counts relating to the sting.

No damage after Bayshore fire

The Munising City Volunteer Fire Department extinguished a small grass fire near the All-Veterans Memorial in Bayshore Park on Monday, June 5. The fire was located on the East side of a small storage building directly behind the memorial. According to MVFD Chief Red Anderson, there was no determined cause of the fire. Witnesses at the scene saw people smoking near the area where the blaze ignited, but there was no evidence to prove that is how the fire started. The fire occurred during the Munising Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market at the other end of the park, but there were no injuries or significant damages reported.
