Attorney held in contempt

In a first for 11th Circuit Court Judge Brian Rahilly, the judge has charged an attorney with contempt for not appearing to hearings in person. George Hyde, an attorney out of Marquette, attended the hearing 20 minutes late through teleconferencing.

McBroom joins other Senate GOPs against Big Rapids battery plant

Michigan state senators are calling for an urgent investigation into Gotion High-tech Co., Ltd., whose subsidiary is being considered for taxpayer funding to support a battery manufacturing plant in Big Rapids. The senators are concerned about the company’s direct ties to China, which they claim presents a national security risk, as well as the lack of transparency and oversight surrounding the proposed project.

Superior Central PTO restarts

On Tuesday, April 18th, Superior Central School held their kickoff meeting to revitalize the PTO. Throughout COVID the PTO struggled to gain traction, so a group of parents came together to give it a fresh start. The group intended to use the meeting to share the goals and mission of the PTO in order to recruit new members but the parents that showed up were ready to get to work and planning began. Many ideas were shared and the first few were chosen and put into action to get the PTO off the ground again.

STEM night in Munising

There was an electric feel at Munising Middle/High School on Wednesday, April 19. There were also feelings of robotics, physics, body systems and astronomy for the 2023 STEM Science Fair. Over 100 exhibits of science, health and technology were spread out across the school with over 400 people attending and taking part of the event.

Second Amendment resolutions pass

The Alger County Commission passed two controversial resolutions regarding Second Amendment rights on Monday, April 10, after they were tabled during the March meetings. Resolution 2023-7 “Instruct our Representatives to Oppose All Firearms Control Legislation” passed 4-1 with Esley Mattson (D-District 3) opposing.

Conservation officers help family stranded near Grand Marais

Michigan DNR conservation officers were called to help a woman, four children, and a dog who were stuck in deep snow on a seasonal county road in Northern Luce County late on Saturday, April 8. Stephanie Rene Knapp, 37, and the children were reportedly travelling north to view the northern lights when their minivan ran out of gas along Luce County Road 407.

Stop oak wilt this Spring

The Do Not Cut or Wound Oak Trees period runs from April 15th through July 15th. This is to prevent the spread of oak wilt (OW) disease. This is the most critical timeline when the Nitudulid beetle (aka picnic beetle, a native beetle) is most active, which is the primary way OW disease is spread in Michigan. The picnic beetle is drawn to the scent of an open wound on oaks for purposes of feeding on the sap. If the beetle has already come into contact with the OW fungus, the spores are introduced and a new infection site develops.

Hiawatha announces prescribed burns locations

The USDA Forest Service plans to conduct prescribed burns on the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests, covering a total of 8,938 acres. The prescribed burns will be carried out on 5 projects, covering 5,373 acres in the East Zone of Hiawatha, 22 projects, covering 3,328 acres in the West Zone of Hiawatha, and 18 projects, covering 237 acres in Ottawa. The burns will be conducted between late April and early fall, subject to weather conditions.
