The Munising Beacon celebrates first anniversary
With today’s edition, The Munising Beacon enters its second year of consistent publication in Munising and Alger County. The first edition was released on Friday, May 13, 2022 with the headline story focusing on the missing time capsule from the Mather Centennial ceremony, the Livermores purchasing the Au Train grocery store and local fundraising efforts at an East Channel trivia night.

Mather Elementary learns through mock trial
One of the fourth grade classes at Mather Elementary participated in a mock trial at the Alger County Courthouse on Wednesday, May 10. The students were able to see how the legal system worked in a controlled environment, with numerous elected officials and county law enforcement and court staff assisting in the project.

Munising Public Schools is reminding students, staff and visitors that local ordinances prohibit outdoor recreational vehicles (ORVs) from legally reaching school grounds. The ordinance in question is 2015-1, which allows ORVs and snowmobiles to leave a private resident and go straight to an approved trail.

The Alger County Commission approved a new opioid policy, which will help train county staff in the use of naloxone and identifying opioid emergencies. After meeting for the committee of the whole on Monday, May 8, the county approved the decision after listening to a presentation from LMAS Health District CEO Nick Derusha and LMAS Nurse Monica Eriksen.

Multiple volunteer firefighters from departments across Alger County participated in a training exercise on Connors Road on Saturday, May 6. Firefighters from the Munising City, Munising Township, Au Train Township, Rock River Township, Tri County and Mathias Township fire departments learned search and breaching techniques on the property.

New visitor center begins construction in Seney National Wildlife Refuge
The Seney National Wildlife Refuge had a groundbreaking ceremony and open house on May 10th, 2023 to celebrate a new visitor center for the area. “We’re thrilled to invite the public to join us for this exciting event,” said Seney National Wildlife Refuge Manager, Sara Siekierski.

Reroute, construction impacts Miners Beach
The Miners Beach area in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will undergo temporary closures and rerouting of the North Country National Scenic Trail at Miners Beach. The project started on Monday, May 8.
