The Munising Beacon celebrates first anniversary
With today’s edition, The Munising Beacon enters its second year of consistent publication in Munising and Alger County. The first edition was released on Friday, May 13, 2022 with the headline story focusing on the missing time capsule from the Mather Centennial ceremony, the Livermores purchasing the Au Train grocery store and local fundraising efforts at an East Channel trivia night.

Mather Elementary learns through mock trial
One of the fourth grade classes at Mather Elementary participated in a mock trial at the Alger County Courthouse on Wednesday, May 10. The students were able to see how the legal system worked in a controlled environment, with numerous elected officials and county law enforcement and court staff assisting in the project.

Landslide at Hickory Street
A major landslide closed the south end of Hickory Street in Munising in the early hours of Thursday, May 4, 2023. Over a dozen trees came were completely dislodged in an event that appears to be from too much water in the hill.

Munising Township to replace 911 signs
Munising Township took major steps towards a long-time goal of the municipality by approving new 911 signs for property parcels in the township. Also known as fire number signs, the township approved the measure at the regular township meeting on Monday, May 1 at the Munising Township Hall.

The Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties is collaborating with various organizations, including Billerud Paper Mill, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate an outbreak of blastomycosis, a fungal infection, linked to the Escanaba Billerud Paper Mill.

The Alger County Road Commission approved a resolution to permanently close the Woodland Road Bridge in Au Train at it’s regular meeting on Monday, May 1. The resolution describes the closure as necessary due to “insufficient purpose”.

One student artwork was chosen for each grade to be professionally framed and put on display in a local business for one year. Come check out the artworks before they head out into the community on Wednesday, May 10 from 5:30-7:00pm. All are welcome to attend this free admission event to honor our local student artists.
