Outhouse Classic pins on sale The Trenary Outhouse Classic pins are now on sale at various locations in western Alger County. The pins are admission to the 31st annual event that brings in over 1,000 fans of the teams competing for fastest outhouse. The Classic is on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Trenary.

Body of missing ice climber found

An ice climber, identified as James Bake of Gaylord, Michigan, age 31, fell into Lake Superior on the evening of February 7, 2023, while climbing in the Miners Castle area of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Multiple agencies responded that evening and coordinated search efforts continued throughout the week as conditions allowed. On Sunday, February 12, 2023, weather and wave conditions on Lake Superior facilitated a focused search of the area using an unmanned aerial vehicle operated by an Alger Country Sheriff’s Department pilot. Mr. Bake’s body was located underwater approximately 30 yards offshore. The recovery operation concluded in the late evening of February 12, 2023.

Red oaks key to Alger conservation

Red Oak or quercus rubra, is a native tree to the U.P. and much of the eastern United States. Red oaks can be found throughout the Hiawatha National Forest in Alger County, as well as in the Deerton area. Red oak is an important tree species for diversity, wildlife food, pollinators, and timber production especially for veneer products and indoor lumber. Oaks tend to be a symbol of strength and many people have an affinity to them for their longevity, beautiful fall foliage, and wildlife benefits.
