Mental health for local students decline

The mental health of Alger County teens have gotten worse over the last two years, and have fallen further behind the national average for positive action and risk awareness. This is according to a study conducted by Alger County Communities That Care (AC3).

In a rare move, Ron LeJeune failed to be reappointed to the Rock River Township Planning Commission. No municipality in Alger County has failed to reappoint a member of its planning commission that has wanted to return to the position since at least 2019.

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained constant over the month at 4.3 percent, according to data released today by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Employment in the state edged down by 1,000, while unemployment was unchanged over the month, resulting in a minor workforce reduction of 1,000 during December.

TaleSpinners Storytime resumes this coming Monday, January 23rd at 10:30 a.m.. Join Ms. Kristin for stories, songs, and crafts about chameleons! Starting in February, recurring once a month, a Park Ranger from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will be at Talespinners Storytime with their Read with a Ranger program. Marsh to retire, no replacement yet for NFS

The National Forest Service announced Tuesday, Jan. 17 that longtime District Ranger Charlie Marsh will be retiring from his position for Munising and Rapid River at the end of March 2023. The announcement was made by Forest Supervisor Mary Moore, inviting the public to join congratulating Marsh.

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians announced Tuesday, Jan. 17 that it will seek relief from a Jan. 3, 2023, ruling from Ingham County Judge Joyce Draganchuk that would award $88 million in damages to the developers of the proposed casinos in Lansing and Romulus.

Hill starts off 109th term

State representative Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) was named to four committees for the Michigan House of Representatives in her first month as Alger County’s voice in Lansing. The 109th district representative was named to the Energy, Communications and Technology committee, the Local Government and Municipal Finance committee, the Higher Education committee and the Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation committee. Hill was named as the majority vice chair for the final committee.

The Munising Public Schools Board of Education will be shifting meeting dates for the 2023 calendar year, but will keep its o ers after meeting on Tuesday, January 17. The board unanimously retained Paula Ackerman as president, Jason Brisson as vice president, John Carr as secretary and Lara Bender as treasurer.
