“Bad Luck Barquentine” discovered in the Shipwreck Coast of Lake Superior
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) is thrilled to announce the discovery of the 144-foot Barquentine Nucleus. The Nucleus was found under 600 feet of water around 40 miles northwest of Vermilion point on Lake Superior.

The Alger County Digital Archive, available in the Munising Public Library affords the user a window into the past via our local historic printed publications. This week in history one hundred years ago saw the most disastrous fire to ever occur in downtown Munising. The Munising News reported on a fire that broke out in the Baij’s barbershop and billiard hall on Superior Street, in the middle of the night during a northwest gale in minus 10 degree temperatures. One life and six large buildings were lost and eleven families were made homeless before the blaze was extinguished. Only by the heroic efforts of the Munising Fire Department was the rest of downtown saved. This amazing article is available for you to read in the Digital Archive at the library. We are please to announce that Mason St. Amour has been chosen as our Student of the Week. He is a 2nd grader and the son of Shaun and Cori St. Amour. Mason is such an empathetic young man. He has one of the biggest and most caring hearts. Mason is constantly volunteering his help to his teachers and classmates. He sets a great example of thoughtfulness and kindness. In his free time, he enjoys hockey, snowmobiling, riding dirt bikes, and working with his dad at Foggy’s. We are so lucky to have Mason in our classroom! Congratulations to Mason and his family.
