Munising School Public Library News

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and the Munising Library is ramping up for it to be the most successful Sign-Up Month ever! Everyone who signs up for a card in the month of September will earn an automatic entry into our Fall Reading Gift Bag Drawing and will also receive an MSPL tote bag filled with info about all the library services and offerings. Mini drawings throughout the month for new cardholders will feature library swag, books, and other items. If you have a library card that you have not used inside the library in over 5 years, it is most likely no longer valid and will need to be renewed or replaced as well. Your new card will qualify you for the drawings too! Stop in during September and find out why a library card is the handiest item in your wallet.

Munising’s Short-Term Rental Moratorium and Master Plan: Balancing Tourism, Housing, and Long-Term Sustainability

Tom Dolaskie, managing director of Deployed Capital, which holds a diverse portfolio of properties, including Roam Inn and both long-term and short-term rentals, has experienced these challenges firsthand. “We’ve experienced significant loss on our rental properties due to tenant neglect, at times landing us in courtrooms to pursue financial remedy,” Dolaskie explained. Nobody wants to live above an active, busy business long-term,” he said.

With the development of the lumbering industries in that wide expanse of area between Gladstone, Rapid River, Munising and Marquette, the turn of the century saw a new settlement spring up at Trenary, which is an approximate central location between these towns. The many French-Canadian settlers soon asked for the services of a Catholic Priest. When possible or necessary, both Father Soulard from Rapid River and Father Dittman from Munising came to baptize and officiate at marriages or funerals.

When Deputy Madison Johnson accepted the job as Alger County sheriff deputy nearly a year ago, she expected some fanfare from the local community - maybe a Facebook post congratulating her with a smattering of positive comments - but surely not the open-arms acceptance she receives daily by strangers, who would say they know the deputy on a first-name basis.
