Munising’s Keena Jones Leads Training Program for Crisis Response Dogs in Marquette

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (HOPE AACR) recently conducted an extensive 3-day training workshop from May 1719, 2024. This event brought together eight dog/handler teams and one team leader from across the Midwest, including two teams from the Upper Peninsula, thanks to a generous donation from the Superior Health Foundation.

Summertime Fitness The Deep Blue Fitness Summer Training Program is intended for both athletes and non-athletes to improve overall physical fitness, both sports-related and in general. The program is for students in grades 6-12, and includes elements of strength-building, endurance, agility, overall functional fitness, and sports performance. The program runs from June 11 through August 29 at Munising High School. Students can sign-up for the whole summer, or on a month-to-month basis. Some of these first are integral to the culture of Michigan even today, and one of these is possibly the first ginger ale in the United States, developed in the mid 1800s by James Vernor. Hiker’s body recovered from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Munising, MICHIGAN — On the evening of Wednesday, May 29th, recovery efforts were completed near the Coves Campground for the body of a 45-year-old male. United States Park Rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore received a call that the individual had fallen unconscious after exhibiting signs of distress while hiking towards Spray Falls. Alger County Sheriff’s Office deployed a marine response vessel to the area while additional personnel responded on foot. The individual, identified as Steven Poppema of Holland, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Island is known for its breathtaking overlooks, pristine beaches, deep hardwoods, and fascinating cultural sites. It offers numerous recreation opportunities including campsites, day sites, hiking and biking trails, beaches, and rental cabins.

Yearly plant sale a success

Last Thursday morning, Munising Baptist Church members unloaded a trailer filled with a variety of plants from Red Barn Greenhouse in Centerville, Michigan. Over the last 15 years, the greenhouse has brought an impressive assortment of vegetable plants as well as beautiful decorative annuals and perennials to Munising for a yearly plant sale to benefit the youth of Munising Baptist Church and School.
