Proposed Kingsford Mail Processing Center changes could have major impact on Upper Peninsula Residents

The opening line of the United States Postal Service’s “Delivering for America” plan document for financial sustainability and service excellence states, “Few organizations so thoroughly and tangibly engage the public as does the United States Postal Service.” Most U.P. residents would likely agree with this sentiment. Thus, it is perplexing that one of the initiatives suggested within the document includes potential plans for the changes to the only mail processing and distribution center in the Upper Peninsula.

Au Sable Light Station tours now free of charge, seven days a week

Beginning Monday, June 10, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s Au Sable Light Station tours will be free of charge and offered seven days a week for the summer of 2024. Following public comment in December regarding the Au Sable Light Station tour fee, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore decided to waive fees associated with tours at the light station this summer.

Alger County Land Bank Grant Paves Way for Cleanup and Sale of Chatham’s Iconic J & F Brisson Sawmill

Pam Johnson, Alger County Treasurer, and the Alger County Land Bank Authority (ACLBA) team strike again! This time, they have their sights set on the J & F Brisson Saw Mill property, a historic six-acre site adjacent to the beloved Mamma Cows ice cream shop in the Village of Chatham. This location is the focal point of a significant revitalization project. Thanks to the concerted efforts of local officials and a substantial $90,911 grant from the Michigan State Land Bank, Chatham is on the brink of transforming this once-thriving industrial hub into a viable commercial property once again.

It’s time, remove your blind

US Forest Service - Hiawatha National Forest The Hiawatha National Forest wants to remind hunters that if you haven’t removed your blind and/or tree stand on Forest Service lands from last deer season, now is the time! The yearly deadlines to remove blinds and stands is long past, but Forest Service Law Enforcement has recently observed many blinds and stands still in the woods. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has established regulations guiding removal of hunting gear.

Munising’s Keena Jones Leads Training Program for Crisis Response Dogs in Marquette

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (HOPE AACR) recently conducted an extensive 3-day training workshop from May 1719, 2024. This event brought together eight dog/handler teams and one team leader from across the Midwest, including two teams from the Upper Peninsula, thanks to a generous donation from the Superior Health Foundation.
