Marquette Hosts Training Program for Crisis Response Dogs

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (HOPE AACR), a national nonprofit organization whose members provide comfort and encouragement, through animal-assisted support, to persons affected by crises and disasters, is conducting an extensive 3-day training workshop for 8 dog/handler teams and 1 team leader from around the Midwest May 17-19, 2024. Two of those teams are from the Upper Peninsula and are being trained thanks to a generous donation from the Superior Health Foundation. These dog/ handler teams will be newly certified crisis response dogs and will be trained to work in high stress situations, noisy and often crowded environments to provide comfort and emotional support for those affected by crisis or disaster. They create a special bridge for those who are isolated or shut down due to trauma.

Prior to the mid-18th century, western Michigan, near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, was populated by the Ottawa people. In 1847 a group from the Netherlands, in an attempt to escape economic issues and freely practice their Calvinist religion, settled and established Holland, Michigan, causing the indigenous people to move north and the newcomers to establish a strong and lasting Dutch heritage in the city named after their homeland.

Pictured Rocks Cruises begin another season

The Pictured Rocks Cruises has already begun their new season. The popular tourist destination in Munising opened for the year on Saturday, and according to operations manager Keegan Nebel, things are off to a great start. “We had about 500 people show up on opening day, which is very good,” he said. “We are excited to get back to it and hopefully have a busy summer.”
