Are you a homeotherm or a poikilotherm? For most of us, we’re the former but with an arguable dose of the latter. Keep your woollies handy! OK, these terms are biological jargon for “warm-blooded” and “cold-blooded”.

On February 5, 2024, the regularly scheduled meeting of the Munising Township Board was held. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Clerk & Supervisor reports, the board moved onto unfinished business from the prior meeting. This included two topics: The cemetery property was first, where the board discussed the actions which need to be taken with the new cemetery plot. Next, the board discussed the expansion and the digitization of future meeting minutes. This included purchasing the services of a people to catalog future and previous meeting minutes, possibly online.

Beacon Staff The Limestone Township Board convened for their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 24, at the Limestone Township Hall. The agenda covered the ongoing discussion of uses for leftover COVID-19 relief funds, the resignation and replacement of a township Board of Review member, and the sharp projected increase in residential properties in the area in 2024.

For the second year, the Natural Resources class is preparing for another smolt release this spring and would like to continue expanding the curriculum and the partnership by engaging students at the Munising Middle-High School in hands-on water quality studies of the local Lake Superior Watershed, including the Anna River and its tributaries. Science teacher Hilary Ludecke is working with the Rotary International Club of Munising, the Alger Conservation District (ACD), and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to raise Chinook Salmon In The Classroom. In order to conduct these hands-on studies Mrs. Ludecke and the students need to raise enough money to purchase a classroom set of Vernier probes and sensors, as well as software to analyze the data collected, and much more.
