Proposed Kingsford Mail Processing Center changes could have major impact on Upper Peninsula Residents

The opening line of the United States Postal Service’s “Delivering for America” plan document for financial sustainability and service excellence states, “Few organizations so thoroughly and tangibly engage the public as does the United States Postal Service.” Most U.P. residents would likely agree with this sentiment. Thus, it is perplexing that one of the initiatives suggested within the document includes potential plans for the changes to the only mail processing and distribution center in the Upper Peninsula.

Au Sable Light Station tours now free of charge, seven days a week

Beginning Monday, June 10, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s Au Sable Light Station tours will be free of charge and offered seven days a week for the summer of 2024. Following public comment in December regarding the Au Sable Light Station tour fee, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore decided to waive fees associated with tours at the light station this summer.

Munising’s Keena Jones Leads Training Program for Crisis Response Dogs in Marquette

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (HOPE AACR) recently conducted an extensive 3-day training workshop from May 1719, 2024. This event brought together eight dog/handler teams and one team leader from across the Midwest, including two teams from the Upper Peninsula, thanks to a generous donation from the Superior Health Foundation.

Hiker’s body recovered from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Munising, MICHIGAN — On the evening of Wednesday, May 29th, recovery efforts were completed near the Coves Campground for the body of a 45-year-old male. United States Park Rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore received a call that the individual had fallen unconscious after exhibiting signs of distress while hiking towards Spray Falls. Alger County Sheriff’s Office deployed a marine response vessel to the area while additional personnel responded on foot. The individual, identified as Steven Poppema of Holland, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yearly plant sale a success

Last Thursday morning, Munising Baptist Church members unloaded a trailer filled with a variety of plants from Red Barn Greenhouse in Centerville, Michigan. Over the last 15 years, the greenhouse has brought an impressive assortment of vegetable plants as well as beautiful decorative annuals and perennials to Munising for a yearly plant sale to benefit the youth of Munising Baptist Church and School.
