MUNISING - In a disappointing turn of events, the Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association (UP200) announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated UP200, Midnight Run, and Jack Pine 30 sled dog races originally scheduled for February 16-18, 2024. The decision was made due to deteriorating trail conditions and concerns for the safety of mushers and their canine companions.

On Thursday, February 1, a group of enthusiastic women joined foresters Sara Kelso (Alger Conservation District) and Anna Ellis (Michigan State University Extension) for a guided hike on snowshoes just outside of Munising at Valley Spur. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures, spirits were high and the trail was in great condition. The loop hiked had a lot of rolling hills and twists and turns which led us through many different forest types and was suitable for all levels of snowshoeing experience.

With the upcoming Michigan Ice Fest on the horizon, safety considerations extend beyond the climbers themselves to include spectators and hikers eager to witness the icy spectacle. While the allure of capturing the climbing action on film is undeniable, it’s crucial to be well-prepared for the journey to the ice formations.

A new community performing arts group, Alger Community Theatre of the Upper Peninsula (ACT UP!), has taken shape over the last month with the goal of reintroducing community theatre to the Munising area.
