As fallout continues to impact Alger County after North Country Disposal pulled its recycling services, a new concern is challenging local business owners regarding responsible waste removal. Commercial recycling is at a complete standstill in Alger County as businesses have no way to get recyclable materials from their locations to transfer stations.

Fun times at the County Fair

The annual Alger County Fair ran from August 4-6 at the county fairgrounds in Chatham, with large crowds participating and visiting in various events during the weekend. Over 100 animals were involved in the livestock show, animal costume contest and horse speed events.

Two bound over, six awaiting ruling in prisoner death case

Two men have been bound over to circuit court on charges related to the death of an inmate in Alger Correctional Facility. Former Michigan Department of Corrections Sergeant Jason Denman and current MDOC officer Shawn Brinkman were bound over from 93rd District Court to 11th Circuit Court after a probable cause hearing on Wednesday, August 9 in the Alger County Courthouse.

Carle named new NFS Chief Ranger

Hiawatha National Forest’s Supervisor, Shannon Rische, has announced the selection of Nate Carle as the District Ranger for the Munising Ranger District in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. “We are so happy to welcome Nate to this important leadership position in the Hiawatha’s West Zone,” Rische said.

Rock River takes firefighter crown

The annual firefighters competition was won by the hometown crowd, as the Rock River Township Volunteer Fire Department defeated Au Train Township and Munising Township for the title. Set up in a round robin, the RRVFD beat both townships to take the victory. All three departments celebrated the opportunity to compete on Sunday, Aug. 6 in front of the fair crowd.

GM Music & Crafts Fest continues The 41st annual Grand Marais Music & Crafts Festival marches on today and tomorrow with music on the main stage starting at noon. A free concert was available Thursday night, but admission is required starting today.
