NLL-leaders Mackinac Island beats Munising Baptist

The Munising Baptist Bobcats played against the Mackinac Island Lakers in a tough battle on Sept. 14 at the Munising Baptist soccer field in Wetmore. For a long time it seemed to be an equal fight till the draw was settled as the Bobcats took the first goal at the Baptist school’s soccer field on Sep, 14th. Dylan Swift scored the first point in the game but then tied once the Lakers got through the Bobcat’s defenses not long after. Ultimately the Baptist Bobcats lost but not without a fight with a score of Lakers 4-2.

SC at Newberry, again The game between the Superior Central Cougars at the Newberry Indians is back on the schedule. Originally, the Cougars were going to Mid Pen to play tonight after Newberry was unable to secure an officiating crew. Further social media posts confused what school was to be held at blame for the scheduling change as SC was unable to travel on Thursday or Saturday. Newberry was able to get an official MHSAA crew for Friday, so the game reverted to the approved Great Lakes Eight East schedule.

A two-day men’s championship will be played at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course this weekend. Qualifying round will be 18 holes on Saturday with match play of nine holes set for Sunday. Two age divisions set of 59 and under, 60 and over with a max of 16 players in the championship flight.

Mustang tennis back on the court

A familiar face is back in charge of the girls tennis program in Munising. Munising alumAbbie Hayes will head the young team for the 2023 girls season and if life allows will do so for the foreseeable future. Hayes was a part of the tennis team from 2016-2019 was an assistant coach for the girls in 2020 and 2021 and revitalized the boys program in 2022 after a three-year hiatus. She has been active in the program for the duration of this time.

Gladstone sweeps SC invite

Over a dozen teams and over 100 racers competed at the Superior Central Invite on Saturday, September 9. The 5K race was held in Eben Junction at the Superior Central Schools fitness trails and around the softball and baseball facilities on the east side of E-T Road. It was the Gladstone Braves that took both the boys and girls varsity meets, with the boys routing second-place Gwinn 34-114, while the girls kept just ahead of Stephenson in a 60-75 race to victory.
