Emeralds hockey controls Cadillac

Chalk up another complete win for the Manistique Emeralds Varsity Hockey team. The Emeralds returned home after a grueling road trip that saw them travel nearly 1,000 miles and play three games in less than four days and beat the Cadillac Vikings in front of another packed house at the Little Bear West Arena in Manistique on Saturday. The program also honored the Varsity Hockey parents in a special ceremony before the puck was dropped.

MTU’s Pietila again a CCHA star

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has announced its Players of the Week for the games of January 19-21 and four student-athletes from four different programs have been recognized. Mack Byers (St. Thomas) was the Forward of the Week, while Akito Hirose (Minnesota State) earned Defenseman of the Week honors. Blake Pietila (Michigan Tech) collected his fourth Goaltender of the Week honor and Lleyton Roed (Bemidji State) was the Rookie of the Week.

Emeralds start new winning streak

After su_ering a pair of recent losses, their first since back before Thanksgiving, the Emeralds Varsity Hockey team is back on track. The Emeralds went below the bridge and brought back a pair of wins, defeating the Cadillac Vikings 5-1 Friday Night before blasting the Lakeshore Badgers Co-Op 9-1 in a Saturday Afternoon mercy. The wins started a brand-new winning streak for a team that was unbeaten in 9 straight contests.

Norse win first conference game

The Bay College Women’s Basketball Team (5-11, 1-1) picked up their first conference win in school history on Wednesday evening in front of a boisterous home crowd. The Norse saw the North Central Michigan College Timberwolves (3-10, 0-2) erase a double-digit lead but held on to earn a 58-52 victory.

Varsity hockey fares well in marathon week

The Emeralds Varsity Hockey team faced one of its toughest tests of their season late last week, playing three times in as many days in a marathon that saw them finish the weekend 2-1 in a stretch that saw incredible comebacks, a dominant defensive effort, and a heartbreaking loss in the final minutes against a hated rival that ended a ninegame unbeaten streak.
