Kay shared with me a moment that truly touched her heart — a beautiful reminder that sometimes the smallest hands hold the biggest hearts and teach us the greatest lessons in kindness.

It was just an ordinary evening at a volleyball game. The bleachers were full, the gym was buzzing and everyone was caught up in the excitement of the match. But in the middle of all that noise and action, something quietly wonderful happened — something that had nothing to do with points or serves, and everything to do with heart.

As Kay sat watching, she noticed her daughter Carlen enjoying a sucker and half-jokingly said she wished she had one too. Without a word, a little girl named Ella noticed. She reached into her tiny purse, walked out to the concession stand and bought one for Kay — no hesitation, no prompting, no one telling her what to do. Just the pure, thoughtful kindness of a child who saw a chance to make someone smile.

When Kay tried to give her money, Ella shook her head and said softly, “No, I wanted to give it to you.” Such a small sentence, yet it carried so much heart.

Ella didn’t just buy Kay a sucker that night — she gave her a moment of unexpected joy and a memory she’ll hold close for a long time. Ella’s kindness was quiet but powerful, a gentle reminder that generosity doesn’t depend on size or age. Sometimes the littlest ones show us the greatest lessons — to notice, to care and to give simply because it feels right.

The volleyball game was a good one, but Ella’s kindness was the real win of the night.

Thank you, sweet Ella, for your tender heart and for reminding us all what true kindness looks like. And thank you, Emily and Jerry, for raising such a caring, observant little girl. You’ve given this community — and my heart — a beautiful reminder that love and kindness are what makes life truly sweet.

And thank you, Kay, for sharing this simple act of kindness. It’s amazing how something so small can touch the heart in such a big way. Moments like this remind us how much love and goodness there is in the world when we take the time to notice. Let’s keep those acts of kindness going — they really do make the world a little brighter.

“Sometimes the smallest hearts make the biggest difference.”
