It’s officially time to call it a three-peat.
Hosting a Division 4 team district event on Feb. 5, the Munising High School wrestling team secured victories over Manistique and Gwinn.
As a result, the Mustangs claimed their third straight district crown.
“This year was the most challenging of my career,” Munising head coach Joe Dolaskie said. “We’ve had an unusual number of kids out with illness and injury, which has impacted the morale of the team. To win this district championship is confirmation that we’re doing things right in spite of all the setbacks. The kids who show up every day and work hard need to be commended.”
Munising opened with a relatively easy 60-18 victory over Manistique in the semifinals. Things got pretty interesting in the championship match, which Munising survived to win 45-33 over the Modeltowners.
The Mustangs fell behind 12-0 after the first two matches, but John Nord got a win in the 106-pound class on pinfall to get Munising on the board. Henry Bosley took win on a void in 120 with Munising trailing 18-12, but they fell further back 24-12 after the next match.
Drew VanLandschoot and Korbyn Smith also won on pinfalls at 132 and 144, respectively, but the team entered the 157 bout behind 33-24.
Cayden Wieczorek got a pin in the 157 class to pull the Mustangs within 33-30, and Kalliah Wieczorek earned a 15-4 major decision to put them in front 3433. A tech fall for Conner Eisonhardt at 175 extended their lead, and Hudson Rockhill pinned his opponent in the final match of the night in the 190 class, securing the title.
“This is the third district championship for Munising, and we hope to win a few more before I retire,” Dolaskie said.
On Saturday, Munising took part in individual districts at Manistique, where they had four wrestlers qualify for regionals.
Nord is a district championship in the 106-pound weight class, capping his day off with a pin of Forest Area’s Connor Hall in the final bout.
Smith will move on in 144, as he took third in his class. He pinned Bodie Lipnitz of St. Ignace in his final match. Cayden Wieczorek also took third in 157; his third-place match featured a win over Collin Maves of Inland Lakes.
Kalliah Wieczorek is the final member to move on, as he took fourth place in 150.
The team regional was scheduled for Wednesday at Charlevoix, and the individual regionals will also be at Charlevoix on Saturday.
