The Grand Marais basketball team played host to Hannahville for Northern Lights League games on Friday and Saturday. The Polar Bears got the 61-45 win on Friday, while Hannahville was able to return the favor on Saturday, defeating Grand Marais 57-44.

In Friday’s victory, the first quarter saw Daniel Irvine bury a pair of 3-pointers for the Polar Bears. Nate Irvine added five points and Ethan Brauer sank a triple, and they led 18-15 after one.

Nate Irvine had a spectacular second frame, pouring in nine points. Brauer put in seven more, and Grand Marais’ lead grew to 39-25 at the half. 

Nine more points from Nate Irvine in the third put the score at 54-36 entering the fourth.

The Polar Bears were led by Nate Irvine with 25 points. Brauer hit two 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Daniel Irvine hit two triples as well and had 10 points. Kevin Hautala added eight points, Hank Hautala scored five and Connor Secrest added two points. 

Things didn’t go as well for the Polar Bears on Saturday. Grand Marais fell behind 19-10 after the first quarter and could never get back into things. They faced a 30-14 hole at the half and a 48-29 gap after three frames. 

The Polar Bears were led in this one by Nate Irvine, who had 14 points. Daniel Irvine hit a pair of 3-pointers on his way to 10 points. Brauer put in nine, Andrew Hyde added seven and Hank Hautala and Sheldon Miller scored two apiece.

Grand Marais is off until Jan. 8, when it hosts Ojibwe Charter.
