Weather kept the Munising girls basketball team from playing its scheduled games over winter break. The team finally got one in on Friday, when it traveled to Brimley and posted a 56-32 non-league victory.
“We were supposed to play a couple games over break, but the weather didn’t cooperate, so I was happy to get a game in at Brimley,” head coach Matt Mattson said. “Brimley does a very nice job running their offense, which at times causes problems. They run a pass-and-cut offense and normally also shoot a lot of 3-pointers. At times our defense played well, but they still beat us on a couple things.”
In the first quarter, Munising’s Kaylen Kienitz hit a pair of 3-pointers and Addie Bowerman knocked down six points as well, and the Mustangs led 14-8 after one. Keira Curtis sank three field goals in the second and Bowerman added five more points, which set the Mustangs with a 25-16 lead at the half.
Munising had its best offensive output in the third, scoring 17 points. Bowerman had seven points in the quarter, and Curtis and Kienitz contributed four each. It was 42-27 entering the fourth.
Bowerman led all scorers with 26 points. Curtis netted 14, Kienitz scored 10 and Taylor LaFlamme added six.
“Offensively our post players, Addie Bowerman and Keira Curtis, led us,” Mattson said. “Taylor LaFlamme and Kaylen Kienitz made some perimeter shots. Liv Cotey had a nice game running the point.”
For the Bays, Callie Tremblay led the way with 11 points and Khloe Dumas and Makenna Cameron had eight points apiece.
The Mustangs (5-0 overall) played at Bark River-Harris on Monday. They head to Newberry tonight (Wednesday), will return home to take on Carney-Nadeau on Friday and will host Manistique on Tuesday.
