SC volleyball team improves to 4-4

There is plenty to like about this young volleyball team from Superior Central.

The Cougars are scrappy and unafraid. Followers cannot tell you the number of times this team gets behind, only to thunder back into a match.

But what coach Kris Bray likes most about her team is its ability to serve. The Cougars can overpower with hard serves, put opponents on their heels with accurate serves in the corner. And sometimes players serve to make their opponents look foolish.

Bray said her coaching staff did not pull some magic from their coaching manual to teach these girls to serve. They came into the program with an excellent serving ability and only got better as the years progressed.

During a recent 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Stephenson, the Cougars (4-4) not only offered up key serves, but they served themselves to monster spikes and digs. One of the main culprits was 5-foot-5-inch outside hitter Peyton Adams. You read that right. She is only 5-5, but finished with six kills and enjoyed a perfect service match.

Junior Lillian Lindgren also had a perfect service match and added five kills and a block. Fellow junior Marlene Johnson finished with four kills, 12 digs and three aces from the service line.

Sophomore Leah Bandeff added four aces, while freshman setter Kate Rondeau finished with eight digs, 12 assists and a block.
