Munising Teams Pool League Week 6 recap (Jan. 22) Week 6 of the Munising Pool League kept fans on edge as teams battled for supremacy, with standout performances and new milestones achieved.
The Grand Marais basketball team has been playing through major growing pains this season. With a highly youthful roster, the Polar Bears have yet to win a game, but head coach Devin Lawrence is focused on other matters such as developing players and preparing for better seasons ahead.
The following sporting events are scheduled over the next week. MMHS is Munising Middle/High School; SC is Superior Central High School; MBS is Munising Baptist School; and BTS is Burt Township Schools, Grand Marais.
Friday’s home game with Ishpeming was looked at as one of the Munising boys basketball team’s biggest tests of the regular season. The Mustangs were able to outlast the Hematites, passing that test with a 57-49 victory.
It might not have been its prettiest win of the year, but the Munising girls basketball team kept its unblemished record intact on Jan. 22. Playing at Superior Central, the Mustangs survived a low-scoring first half to win 43-23 and move to 11-0 on the year.
At halftime of their home boys basketball game with Carney-Nadeau, Superior Central held a three-point lead. SC head coach Adam Ely felt his team could play even better in the second half, and they did just that, pulling away to earn a 48-38 victory.
Considering Paradise has a court that plays a bit smaller than regulation, things tend to get interesting for opponents. The Munising Baptist boys basketball team would probably agree with that after Friday, when they played on the Rockets’ home court and escaped the Northern Lights League game with a 59-54 overtime victory.
As we head into the end of January and kick off February, this week offers plenty of exciting events and opportunities to gather with your community. From a delicious fish fry at the Moose Lodge to Upper Peninsula Inspired’s gin and vodka tasting, there’s something for everyone.
Newberry entered last Friday’s girls basketball game with a solid 9-2 record. Munising, however, came in undefeated, and the Mustangs kept their perfect season intact with a well-played contest, topping the Indians 58-35.
