A 3-year-old child has died following a structure fire Thursday evening in the city of Munising, according to Alger County Public Information Officer Robert Steinhoff.

In a media release issued by Steinhoff in his role as Alger County Public Information Officer, it was reported that at approximately 5:45 p.m. Thursday, April 24, Alger County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a structure fire in the 600 block of Superior Street.

Munising City Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 5:47 p.m., along with Munising Township Fire Department. Munising City Fire crews arrived on scene with multiple engines between 5:48 p.m. and 5:50 p.m., where they found the structure fully engulfed in flames.

AuTrain Township and Rock River Township fire departments were also dispatched for mutual aid.

Officials confirmed the fire resulted in a single fatality — a 3-year-old child who lived at the residence. The family has been notified, but names are not being released.

Firefighters from multiple departments responded, along with officers from the Munising City Police Department, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and the U.S. Forest Service. Emergency crews cleared the scene shortly after 11 p.m.

The release concluded with the following statement: “On behalf of the family and the emergency responders, we ask that the public be respectful in the wake of this unthinkable tragedy.”
