Obituaries & Death Notices

Submission Guidelines, Policies & Rates

The Munising Beacon publishes death notices and obituaries as a service to families and the communities we serve.

Death notices: The Beacon publishes a basic death notice of up to 50 words at no charge. Complimentary death notices are intended to announce a death and may include the deceased’s name, age, community of residence, date of death and funeral, visitation or memorial service information.

Biographical information, personal tributes, lists of survivors and other material celebrating or describing the life of the deceased are considered obituary content.

Death notices exceeding 50 words or submissions containing substantial obituary content are considered paid obituaries and are subject to the Beacon’s current obituary rates.

Obituaries: Obituaries of up to 1,500 words are accepted as paid submissions. Pricing is based on length. Current rates and the publication cost are available upon request and will be confirmed before publication.

Photos: Families may submit a photograph of the deceased for publication with an obituary. Photographs must be of sufficient quality for print reproduction. The Beacon reserves the right to decline photographs that cannot be adequately reproduced or are inappropriate for publication.

Verification: The Beacon may require verification of a death before publishing a death notice or obituary. Verification may be provided through a funeral home, cremation provider, official record or another reliable source acceptable to the editorial staff.

Submissions: Death notices and obituaries may be submitted by funeral homes or directly by family members or authorized representatives. The person submitting the notice or obituary is responsible for the accuracy of names, dates, relationships, service information and other details contained in the submission.

Editing: Death notices and obituaries may be edited for spelling, grammar, punctuation, AP style, clarity, length and consistency with Beacon publication standards. The Beacon will make reasonable efforts to preserve the meaning and substance of a family’s submission. Questions involving substantial changes may be referred to the submitting party before publication.

The Beacon reserves the right to decline material that is potentially libelous, contains unsubstantiated allegations, is discriminatory or threatening, constitutes advertising or solicitation, or is otherwise inappropriate for publication.

Payment: Payment for paid obituaries must be received or arranged before publication unless the submitting funeral home or organization has established billing arrangements with The Beacon.

Additional publication: A complimentary death notice may be published a second time for a nominal charge. Obituaries requested for an additional publication are charged at the regular applicable obituary rate.

Deadline: Death notices and obituaries must be received by 5 p.m. Monday for consideration for that week’s edition. Submissions received after the deadline may be held for the following issue.

Publication is subject to available space and The Beacon’s production schedule.

Obits may be submitted to obits@munisingbeaconmedia.com.
