Mustangs serve past Broncos

The goals were simple. The execution? Outstanding.

The Munising girls volleyball team wanted to keep pressure on Bark River-Harris with superior serves — the team’s strength. And the Mustangs wanted to make sure their play did not slip in service returns.

Mission accomplished, as Munising romped 25-17, 25-9, 25-13 in a home match last week. Now there is a new mission as the Mustangs (5-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play) seek to win a weekend tournament Saturday at Forest Park after taking on Mid Peninsula in a non-league match on Thursday.

Munising put Bark River-Harris to sleep with 26 kills and 16 aces. Junior Addie Bowerman led the way with 11 kills, 10 digs, 4 aces and a solo block. Senior Carissa Deatsman recorded 19 assists, 8 digs and 3 aces. Kaylen Kienitz added 11 digs, 7 kills and 4 aces.

“We stressed the concept of owning your rotation, and that is to serve with purpose and consistency so that the team can achieve success on defense and offense,” Munising coach Josh Cole said. “Overall, very happy with the effort and execution from all our athletes as a team.”

Vera Nettleton chipped in 3 kills, 3 aces and 4 digs. The ease of the match allowed Cole to give more playing time to junior backup middle hitter Joy O’Neil, who recorded her first ace of the season.

SC works on passing

The Superior Central Cougars did not play last week, but that does not mean they were off. The team worked on passing, passing and more passing as they prepared for a busy week. The Cougars travel to Bark River-Harris on Thursday, Sept. 17. They were on the road Tuesday at North Central.
